Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Chemistry and Applied Learning Programs (ALP) and Research Mentorship
Participants will be guided through the investigation process to draw on a wide spectrum of scientific knowledge from biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. This allows participants to gain experience in applying problem-solving skills to a broad field using the natural and physical sciences. Active learning platform and ample hands on activities provides students with opportunities to discover scientific principles for themselves. This learning-by-doing model creates opportunities for participants to gain knowledge through doing and application in an environment that is both meaningful and fun.
This program is designed for participants with intermediate background in the life sciences. Recombinant DNA technology is introduced into this program through a simple yet elegant experiment, Genetic Transformation. Participants will marvel at how an insertion of a foreign piece of DNA can create genetically modified organisms with different characteristics.
This program is designed to explore the mechanisms of the causative agent of avian flu, H5N1 virus, its mode of infection and points to a possible approach (using Polymerase Chain Reaction) to diagnose the disease that is currently evaluated by scientists. Participants will learn how to appreciate the work of epidemiologists in profiling an infectious disease and how to fight against it.
A thematic program that was developed based on a a true story. Participants will play the role of Medical Microbiologists where they are required to attempt to identify and determine the treatment to a microbe that is plaguing a town. Participants will be taught skills such as microbial culturing and differentiation. Possible treatments will be tested eradicate the epidemic. Participants will also attempt to study the mode of infection through a fun and interactive activity!
Participants will explore the world of Plant Extracts in treating bacterial infections in this workshop. Antibacterial activities have been found in a vast number of plants and spices. These have contributed greatly to the limited resources of antibiotics that we have to fight diseases. Participants will be taught methods of extraction and tests that can be conducted to determine their effectiveness against known bacteria.
This program encompass a pre-field trip laboratory session where participants will be taught the skills of using dataloggers for measurement of various parameters that can be applied during the field trip. The field trip covers the adaptation features of various flora and fauna in order for them to survive in the harsh mangrove environment. Symbiotic relationships among the flora and fauna will be introduced.
This program explores how the physical, chemical and microbial contaminants can be removed from contaminated water in order to produce potable water. Participants will be taught how to test and compare the effectiveness of bio- and phyto-remediation in treatment of water. Participants will also be challenged to build a water purification device to purify water.
Having strong innovation skills is critical and this program aims to build participants’ creativity and innovation ability. Participants will learn to put forward their ideas with confidence and each individual will get to design their own perfume. Participants will also learn simple extraction techniques and Chemistry theories. This main module can be customised and integrated with making the following as sub-modules:
This program trains participants in their research and development skills surrounding a Microbiology theme. Participants will be required to determine the independent variables to be tested and develop a suitable procedure where experiments will be conducted to prove their hypothesis. Participants will be guided on their data analyses before preparing for deliverables such as a Scientific Report or Presentation.
This program explores the effects of various sound frequencies on bacteria, Staphylococcus epidermidis. Integration of arduino programming to generate various sound frequencies can be applied to this research. Participants determine the independent variables to be tested and develop the procedure to prove their hypotheses. Participants will be guided on their data analyses before preparing for deliverables such as a Scientific Report or Presentation.
This program focuses on the study of how different variables will affect the tensile strength of the bioplastic. Participants will then be taught the procedures of making bioplastics before proceeding to conduct studies on how the ingredients in the making of bioplastic affects the tensile strength of the bioplastic. Participants will be given the opportunity to design their experiment and present their results using a Scientific Report or Presentation.
Participants will learn how to carry out Polymerase Chain Reaction and understand its application in genetic research. In the process of their investigation, participants will learn how to perform DNA extraction from plant products and purify them before carrying out amplification. Amplified products will be screened for presence of certain genes which indicates genetic modification.
A fully qualified consultant will be onsite to supervise the students for a total of 40 hours. Guidance will be provided for :
A helpline will be made available for the students five days a week to answer any questions or troubleshoot problems.

Antibiotics are used for prevention and treatment of animals having bacterial infections of the udder (mastitis). Milk is examined for antibiotics residues because they pose a hazard to consumers and could cause production problems of fermented milk products.
Eclipse is a microbial growth inhibition test that can be used for detection of antibiotic residues in milk. It is a very simple and ready-to-use test, with a sensitivity complying with EU-MRLs.
The unknown mixture of milk from different species is a common fraud in dairy sector. Sheep milk is more expensive than goat or cow's milk and tends to be adulterated with those of lower cost. This adulteration is important, not only for economical reasons, but also because unknown milk mixtures produce changes in the final sensory properties and reduce the product quality.
IC kits are lateral flow tests for species identification of milk and cheese.
Salmonella and Listeria are pathogenic bacteria in food that cause severe diseases in humans.
Microlab DETECT is a simple and fast method to detect Salmonella and Listeria in food. A revolutionary system that takes the laboratory into a single device.
Some strains Escherichia coli can cause harm to the human body. The most common of these strains is E. coli O157:H7, which can be commonly found in raw/undercooked beef, raw/unpasteurized milk, and
sewage-contaminated water. Infection by the E. coli O157:H7 bacteria may lead to the acute disease hemorrhagic colitis and/or the chronic disease hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
MICROFAST E. coli 0157, intended to detect E. coli in
food, will allow to take decisions quicker and reduce the assay cost.
Food allergies pose public health issues. Many countries (USA, Canada, Japan, EU, etc.) are approving new allergen laws on what information must be provided to consumers regarding the presence of allergens in food.
The PROTEON ELISA food testing methods allow a quantitative determination of allergens in food and on working surfaces.
Microcystins are a group of hepatotoxins produced by cyanobacteria during and after blooms in water bodies. Consumption of contaminated water with these toxins can promote cancer. The toxicity of microcystins is associated with the inhibition of protein phosphatases 1 and 2A enzymes (PP1 &PP2A), which leads to hepatocyte dysfunction.
MicroCystest is a kit based on the inhibition of the PP2A activity by microcystins, thus is able to detect all potential toxic microcystins present in the sample
Human consumption of shellfish contaminated with saxitoxins produced Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP), which causes symptoms from numbness to fatal respiratory paralysis. The European Union Regulation (EC) No. 853/2004 stipulates that a kilogram of live bivalve molluscs must not contained more than 800 micrograms of saxitoxins.
SaxiTest is an immunoenzymatic test performed in a 96 microtitier plate for detection of saxitoins in shellfish such as mussles or oysters.
Human consumption of shellfish contaminated with OA-toxins group (OA, DTX1, DTX2 and its esters) causes Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP). Inhibition of serine/threonine protein phosphatases (PP1 & PP2A) activity by these toxins is assumed to be responsible for diarrheic disorders.
OkaTest is a ready-to-use colorimetric phosphatase inhibition assay for quantification of OA-toxins and is performed in a 96-well microtiter plate applicable to shellfish such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops.
